Car sits idleing but will not pick up for ages

Post by Ianep » Mon Mar 26, 2018 11:59 am

Any one help with this one: car will idle with chock in and foot to the floor but it not fire up for ages. If I adjust the Choke it stops the engine. Eventually after about a minute and a half the engine will fire up. Is that okay for the day.

It’s only a problem When the engine is cold in the morning, anyone offer any solutions to this strange problem

Most likely the mixture is set wrong on the carb. At a guess, I would say it might be set slightly too rich (foot to the floor makes it leaner and you say choke out stalls it. It's odd though because normally running rich gets worse when the engine warms). It does sound like something may be up with the way your choke cable is connected and adjusted too though (as I remember you saying it was springing out on its own). Take the air box off and check the choke lever moves fully up and down (stopping when it hits the adjustment screw) on the bottom of the carb as you operate the choke plunger in and out on the dashboard.

Have a look at Fifer's tips for adjusting the choke and the mixture (they explain better than I could):

Choke: https://sites.google.com/site/fifersrel ... adjustment

Mixture: https://sites.google.com/site/fifersrel ... adjustment

There are other things that could be causing this too, but try these things first as they're the most likely and easiest to do.
Push the pedal to the errr.. glass-reinforced plastic! 8-)

Also check the air slide in the carb can move up and down freely, also that there is the correct amount of oil in the damper chamber.
